Papaya, also known as Carica Papaya, is considered one of the important fruit crops in the Philippines. It is a good source of nutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, protein, carbohydrate, and phosphorus. Unripe papaya contains the enzyme papain which is obtained from the latex and is used as a meat tenderizer, in beer processing, softening of woolens, manufacture of toothpaste, and nowadays it is also widely used as a main ingredient in many whitening products like soap and lotion. The leaves when properly flavored can also be made into a cigarette. The ripe fruit is eaten as a breakfast fruit or as an ingredient in fruit salads. While papaya is a source of numerous health benefits, eating too many may cause side effects, too.
Consuming papaya may reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, aids in digestion, aids in lowering blood sugar and blood pressure, and improves wound healing. Even though papaya presents many health benefits, a few side effects may occur in some people. The papaya contains a high amount of chemicals like latex, which is found in high quantities in the unripe papaya fruit. The latex in papaya may cause uterine contractions and early labor when taken during pregnancy. There is also some evidence that unprocessed papain found in unripe papaya fruit, might poison the fetus or cause birth defects.
Papaya may cause severe allergic reactions and is, therefore, contraindicated in sensitive people. People with latex allergies may experience symptoms such as hives, stuffy nose, wheezing, and chest tightness. In cases of severe latex allergy, eating papaya can lead to anaphylaxis or severe breathing difficulty. Moreover, the enzyme papain found in papaya may also impact reproductive health. In large amounts, it can suppress progesterone and long-term consumption may cause decreased sperm counts and lead to infertility. Nonetheless, Papaya is also a good source of fiber and is beneficial for digestive health. However, eating too much may also have a laxative effect causing an upset stomach and diarrhea. Keep this in mind that an excess or a deficit of something usually presents bad effects. So better be in good and healthy condition by doing things in moderation.
