Dengue is an acute viral infection that affects mostly young children and infants. It is manageable with proper diet and medical care. Individuals who suffer from dengue must pay more attention to the diet as it plays a key role in recovery and helps medicines to work effectively.
Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus which are also carriers of chikungunya and Zika viruses. Based on the data from Department of Health (DOH), from January 1 to July 3, 2021, a total of 32, 555 dengue cases with 199 deaths were reported, and is 43% lower compared to the same period in 2020.
While there are several medical treatment and care provided to dengue patients, healthy diet is important to hasten the recovery from the disease. But what foods should be included in the diet of dengue patients for faster recovery?
Papaya leaf, Broccoli and Spinach. These foods increase the platelet count and boost the immune system, which is important to immediately recover from the disease. A low platelet count caused by the dengue virus may lead to internal bleeding, failure of the circulatory system and shock.
Coconut water, natural fruit juices. Dengue often leads to dehydration and these foods keep the body hydrated and are loaded with electrolytes, vitamins and minerals. While fruits can be eaten as is, turning it in liquid form is easier to consume despite of the lack of appetite and body weakness. Go for citrus fruits like oranges, kiwi, and guavas which are rich in vitamin C to aid in iron absorption and strengthens the immune system.
Eggs, chicken, nuts. A high amount of protein in the diet spares body wasting and help recover the lost nutrients. This body-building nutrient is responsible in creating more platelets and blood cells which is vital in the recovery.
Pomegranate. Being a rich source of iron, this food helps in maintaining a normal blood platelet and detoxify the liver. It also reduces the feeling of exhaustion and fatigue which are some of the common symptoms of dengue.
While these foods may be beneficial to the recovery from the disease, some foods should also be avoided or minimized in the diet. Fried and oily foods contain unhealthy fats leading to high blood pressure and cholesterol and can also weaken the immune system. Spicy foods can hinder the recovery process and may damage the stomach wall due to acid build up. Also, avoid consuming caffeinated and carbonated drinks and alcoholic beverages as these foods causes dehydration, fatigue, muscle breakdown and rapid heart rate.
Aside from the healthy diet, adequate rest, and a clean environment are also vital. Sleep as much as possible to help the body recharge and boost the immune system. Also, Follow the DOH’s Enhanced 4-S Campaign against Dengue: (1) search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, (2) secure self-protection measures, (3) seek early consultation and (4) support fogging/spraying in hotspot areas, to prevent the spread of infection.
Dengue is now a year-round disease with a peak transmission during the rainy season from May to November. Prevention is better than cure. Let’s all make our homes and communities dengue-free! Boost the immune system through good nutrition. Remember, no single food contains all the nutrients the body needs to be healthy. It is essential to eat a variety of foods daily in the right amount for good health and better immunity against infections including dengue.
