Veggies for ChikitingPalo, Leyte“Additional learning particularly on the different food locally found in the community are relevant information that will help us BNSs share to mothers and caregivers in our area of assignment”, relayed by the group of barangay nutrition scholars (BNS) participated the virtual conference from Sta. Fe Leyte during its BNS Day conducted on 28 July 2021 via Zoom Platform.

The Department of Agriculture with its Senior Agriculturist, Ms. Nemie Aurora Abalos discussed to the group the topic, “The Right Veggies sa mga Chikiting”.

The topic focuses on the different food the mother or caregivers can introduce to a growing child, starting at six months.

Ms. Abalos introduced food rich in energy, protein, fruits and vegetables and food containing oil and fats.

Mothers and caregivers can share foods such as cooked chicken, pork or fish flake, mashed egg, potato, banana, and papaya, pounded or crushed beans, dilis, sliced or chopped malunggay, carrot and other vegetables. Likewise, food can also be grinded or scraped such as fruits.


Importantly, Ms Abalos emphasized that proper handling and sanitation is important to prepare and cook food.

In the region, Ms. Abalos shared the locally grown vegetables and root crops. She also relayed that at the municipal level, the local agriculture office can assist individual or groups who are interested in backyard gardening and producing food for the family.
