The officers and members of the regional Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars of NCR, Inc. led by its President, Mr. Michael Teberio, together with NNC-NCR staff visited Mandaluyong City, dubbed as the “Tiger City”, for their annual “Lakbay-Aral” or study tour last September 23, 2011.
This annual study tour or learning visit is part of their continuing education program which aims to enhance their knowledge on the BNS Program and enable them to observe good practices and innovative nutrition projects which can be replicated in their respective localities.
Mandaluyong City, being this year’s Green Banner Awardee and Most Child-Friendly City in the region was unanimously chosen by the BNSs for their learning visit. They were welcomed by no less than the city’s First Lady and City Nutrition Action Officer Mrs. Carmelita “Menchie” A. Abalos together with the nutrition secretariat and members of the City Nutrition Committee.
The participants visited the city nutrition office to see how records and reports are properly filed. They also had the opportunity to interact with some of the members of the CNC on how they implement and document their nutrition programs, particularly the BNS program of the city.
The BNSs were given a tour in the various nutrition projects of the city such as the Project TEACH of the Center for Alternative Rehabilitation and Educational Services (C.A.R.E.S.) which is a non-profit facility that caters to indigent special children of the city;brick-making out of recycled waste materials; magazine bead-making, and newspaper bag-making. They also visitedMs. Thess Candelario, and the showcase barangays in the 2011 Search for Most Child-Friendly City to observe their innovative nutrition projects and good practices.
The BNSs had a great time going around the city via the E-Trikes (electric tricycles), also an innovative transportation project of the city.
The activity was successful as it was both an enjoyable and an enriching learning experience for the BNSs from all over Metro Manila.
