RO9 BumpEyelidFor sure, most of us, if not all, have experienced a bump on our eyelid commonly called “buringgit” in our local dialect. For males, they associate it as a punishment due to voyeurism. But that cause is an obvious tattletale misconception. Eyelid bumps are painful, red lumps at the edge of the eyelid, typically where the lash meets the lid. Bacteria or a blockage in the oil glands of the eyelid causes most eyelid bumps. Most bumps on the eyelid are styes. A stye is an inflamed oil gland on the edge of your eyelid, where the eyelash meets the lid. It is a round, red, swollen bump that appears close to your eyelashes. It is often tender to the touch and can also cause you to be sensitive to light and make your eye watery or feel scratchy.

A stye can become a chalazion, which occurs when the oil-producing glands or tear glands in the eyelids become fully blocked. A chalazion usually grows further on your eyelid than a stye. In most cases, it’s painless but can interfere with your vision depending on where it grows and how big it gets. Other types of eyelid bumps are xanthelasma and milium. Xanthelasma is harmless, yellow bumps that occur when certain fats build up under the skin. These bumps tend to appear in older adults. In some cases, they indicate high cholesterol levels. A millium is a tiny white cyst common among children.

Some of the common symptoms of eyelid bumps that you may experience are swelling, tenderness, redness, irritation, and blurry vision. A person with an eyelid bump should never poke, squeeze or try to pop an eyelid bump. This may cause a more serious problem. Eyelid bumps are often harmless and usually clear up on their own in a few weeks. However, if you have a large, very painful, or begins to interfere with your vision, you may want to see your doctor about ways to manage your symptoms or to look for signs of a more serious problem. In severe cases, your doctor can drain the bump and give you antibiotics to help it heal. Let’s take care of our eyes. Sometimes ignoring something is better than making a fuzz out of it. Just let our body do its wondrous job but also do our part by doing proper personal hygiene.
