Last 8th of April 2021, Barangay Solar of the Municipality of Olutanga, Zamboanga del Sur distributed BIMO Curls and other ready-to-eat food commodities to 6-59 months old children as part of their of complementary feeding to children who were identified to be malnourished using the MUAC tape with a reference of less than eleven point five centimeters (<11.5cm). This initial complementary food feeding program aims to help decrease the incidence of malnutrition in the country, targeting zero malnutrition by the year 2030.
The activity provided BIMO Instant Food Blend and also BIMO Nutri-curls to children which were procured by the LGU from the DOST-FNRI technology adapter in Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay. These food commodities, with a combination of rice-mongo ingredients, serve as complementary foods rich in protein and are energy-dense. The BIMO baby food blend contains 120kcal and 4 g protein per 30 gram. Meanwhile, the Nutri-curls is a blend of rice flour and mongo that contains 130kcal and 4g of protein per 30grams. This meets seventeen percent (17%) of recommended energy and nutrient intake (RENI). The product is ready-to-eat just by adding boiling water depending on the desired consistency.
Through this action, the LGU is one step closer to achieving our national goal in eradicating malnutrition in the country. It doesn’t matter how small the activity is, like this nutrition-specific intervention, for as long as the LGU is moving forward at scaling up nutrition and sustaining its nutrition efforts, surely the aspiration of the government to produce a well-nourished and productive citizenry will be achieved. As the saying goes according to Torry Robbins, “Setting a goal is the first step in taking the invisible to visible”. Together, with our collaborative efforts in no time, we can achieve our national goal.
