HILONGOS, Leyte – Another special project of the municipality of Hilongos, Leyte is the implementation of Local Nutrition in Early Warning System (LNEWS).
Earlier dubbed the Early Warning System for Food and Nutrition Security is a component of the Philippine Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (PFNSS) that is intended to enable LGUs to take timely nutrition action through early detection of a worsening nutrition situation based on monitoring of nutrition and nutrition-related indicators.
The LNEWS is a tool for predicting food and nutrition security of an area. Subsequently, it also predicts nutritional status of vulnerable sectors and the general population as well.
During the LNEWS monitoring Municipal Nutrition Coordinator Mr. John Mark Arrabis presented the 2021 first and second quarter report.
Both quarters yielded a hundred percent sample size of 95 households. Important to note than in one surveillance barangay it noted a 9 children aged 0-59 months old to be stunted. RNPC told the municipal nutrition staff to validated and monitor the 9 stunted children since this will not be included in the next quarter Monitoring.
While it was noted to have moderate to severe rainfall as determined by the LGU, it did not affect the food system hence there was no reported price increase of basic commodities and malnutrition in most surveillance barangays was either none or one except the 9 who was reported in the first quarter.
Moreover, such was attributable to new farm to market road network that facilitate ease in transportation of major produce. Also noted and verbalized by the Municipal Agriculture Officer that the residual ECCD downloaded funds was used to purchase seeds and distributed to targeted households for their home backyard gardening.
Further, it was interesting to note that most household in the surveillance barangays were having stocks of beverages such as soft drinks.
The RNPC told the nutrition staff to further investigate the matter. He further address to the SB Committee on Health, Nutrition and Sanitation Hon. Bernardeth Moran-Nerves to pass resolution as regards to avoid sweetened-beverages.
He told the good SB member to adopt RDC Resolution # 69 series of 2015 encouraging utilization of non-carbonated drinks and sweetened beverages.
The Municipal nutrition office is currently encoding their data in the system for the 3rd quarter. #NPC-CPD
