National Health Education Week1PALO, Leyte – Created by the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE.org), the National Health Education Week (NHEW) is an annual celebration that aims to increase national awareness on major public health issues and promoting a better understanding of the role of health.

Since 1995, the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), NHEW was initially celebrated in collaboration with the Department of Health every third week of October.

As define by the World Health Organization (WHO), health education is any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities improve their heslth by increasing their knowledge and influencing their attitudes.

Moreover, health education increases knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes toward health. It covers physical, mental, emotional, and social health and motivates students to improve and maintain their own health while reducing harmful behaviors and preventing disease.
The purpose of health education is to improve the health status of people, communities, and the nation. Educators work to strengthen the quality of life for all individuals and reduce premature deaths and disabilities.

When health education specifically focuses on prevention, it helps lower the financial burden spent on medical issues. Educating the masses in health literacy is a large component of health status within the country.

As we celebrate the NHEW we should do things in the observance of the celebration: being advocate to specific issues; be a “social butterfly” by employing a social media campaign to bring attention to health education.

A number of social tools are available for individuals to get involved online to promote the importance of health education. You can also pay a visit to your doctor for a check up make sure your health is in good shape. Get curious about your health and feel free to ask your doctor about how to maintain a healthier life.

Moreover, education is best. The more we know about our health the better we can take care of ourselves. As an opportunity for action, this national event provides for citizens to get involved in promoting good health. #NPC-CPD
