The National Nutrition Council successfully organized the first of the three-part 2025 Sub-Island Conference on Food and Nutrition Security on August 12-13, 2025 at the Sequoia Hotel Manila Bay, with a strong call to champion nutrition initiatives especially at the local government level. The two-day event brought together key stakeholders from Luzon to advance the goals of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023-2028, with discussions centered on key food and nutrition programs and enabling mechanisms for effective implementation and strategies to transform food systems toward healthier diets, including the role of schools, agriculture sector, and social welfare programs in shaping healthier food environment. Local government units (LGUs) and partner agencies were recognized as vital champions in localizing and implementing food and nutrition programs, with capacity-building, human resource empowerment, and active community engagement identified as essential drivers of impact.

Panel sessions and insights from the open forum underscored the importance of strong governance, multi-sectoral collaboration, and sustainable financing to ensure nutrition programs and interventions reach priority communities, while participants during the workshop sessions showcased good practices on transforming healthier diets and food security in their localities and featured experiences and suggestions on better nutrition program implementation.

The success of the event served as a powerful call for all local leaders and public health workers to champion nutritionโ€”recognizing that every decision and action creates lasting health gains and can strengthen food and nutrition security in their respective localities. The other two sub-island conferences in Visayas and Mindanao will take place in September and October, respectively.
