The National Nutrition Council (NNC), in collaboration with the World Health Organization Philippines, successfully convened the Technical Working Group on Overweight and Obesity Management and Prevention for an Implementation Workshop held on 3-5 June 2025, at Hotel Dominique, Tagaytay City. The workshop gathered key representatives from national government agencies, academic institutions, professional organizations, civil society, and development partners to align efforts in addressing the growing obesity burden in the country.
In her welcome message, NNC Assistant Secretary and Executive Director IV Dr. Azucena Milana-Dayanghirang, emphasized collaboration, commitment, and the importance of turning plans into impactful, coordinated efforts to improve the health and nutrition of Filipinos. She closed with a strong and heartfelt call for all stakeholders to join forces in bringing the national strategy on overweight and obesity to life. The message was delivered by Ms. Jomarie L. Tongol, Nutrition Officer IV and Officer-in-Charge of the Nutrition Information and Education Division of the NNC.
Dr. Eunyoung Ko, Officer-in-Charge of WHO Philippines, delivered an inspiring message reaffirming WHOโs support for the fight against the rising cases of overweight and obesity prevalence in the Philippines.
The highlight of the workshop was the Segmented Workshop sessions where member agencies actively discussed and developed the implementation framework with budgetary requirements anchored on four strategic pillars: Overweight and Obesity Prevention, Obesity Management, Policy and Regulation, and Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation. These efforts aimed at translating the goals of the Philippine Strategic Plan in Addressing Obesity and Other Metabolic Disorders into actionable and measurable strategies to reduce obesity and improving public health outcomes. The global and national obesity trends as well as the overview of the Strategic Plan were also presented to set the background of the activity.
Through sustained collaboration and strong stakeholder commitment, the NNC continues to drive forward evidence-based policies and programs that promote healthier lives for all Filipinos.
